Offshore Container

An offshore container is a container with a maximum gross mass of 25,000 kg, built for repeated use in the transport of goods and equipment as handled in open seas, to and from or between fixed and floating installations and ships. That duty is what separates it from a standard container: it is lifted by crane on and off platforms in a marine environment, so it is designed, produced and inspected to DNV 2.7-1 and ISO 10855, class certified, and marked with a nameplate showing its maximum gross mass, tare and payload.

Choosing one comes down to four decisions. What it carries: closed CCU boxes for general cargo, open top and half-height baskets for awkward loads, offshore tank and IBC containers for liquids, reefers for temperature-controlled cargo, and workshops, tool boxes, waste skips, mud skips and bottle racks for specialised duties. Size: 6ft, 7ft, 8ft, 10ft, 13ft, 20ft and 40ft units. Maximum gross mass and lifting: the unit and its lifting set have to match your platform crane capacity, and it helps to say up front whether it also needs to work as a standard dry van for sea freight. Certification: BV, LR or DNV-GL class certification, with the nameplate and documentation required offshore.

Every unit is painted for the marine environment — ISO 12944 C4 at 160 µm, or C5-M at 280 µm for the most aggressive exposure — and built from traceable materials under the DNV 2.7-1 regime.
