Q1: Why is sodium fluorosilicate used in so many industries?
The diverse applications of sodium fluorosilicate are all based on its thermal decomposition, hydrolysis to produce fluoride, and the chemical activity of fluoride ions. In glass and ceramics, high-temperature precipitation of fluoride microcrystals scatters light, achieving opacification and reducing viscosity, thus acting as a flux. In acid-resistant cement, it reacts with silicates to form a silicon-oxygen cross-linked network for curing. Wood preservation and insect control rely on fluoride ions interfering with the enzyme systems of microorganisms and pests. In natural latex, it releases active substances that disrupt the stability of the particles, promoting coagulation. During electroplating, it adjusts pH, activates the surface, and improves the uniformity of the coating. In plastics, it is used as an inert filler to increase volume. In drinking water and pharmaceuticals, it releases slow-release fluoride ions to prevent tooth decay or for fluoridation treatment, and is also used as a raw material for the synthesis of cryolite and sodium fluoride. These applications are essentially specific transformations of physicochemical properties in different scenarios.
