Should smart door locks be installed with sky hooks or not?

Created on 2024.12.29
In the early days, the design of security doors focused more on the 'anti-pick' aspect. In addition to requiring a higher level of security for opening the door with a key, security doors were also designed with multiple locking tongues to prevent people from prying the door open and entering. This is when the heaven and earth hook came into being.
Because prying the door is a single point of operation, security door manufacturers added two sets of locking tongues to the upper and lower edges of the door, which is the origin of the entry door's heaven and earth hooks. Later, as the internet continued to develop, the threshold for people to acquire knowledge became lower and lower. Some people began to share lock-picking methods online, which were then used by those with ulterior motives to develop their own lock-opening techniques. 'Lock picking' is no longer viable; it has become 'technically content-free.' The heaven and earth hooks are no longer so important in the face of lock-opening technology, because as long as the lock cylinder can be opened, all lock tongues will obediently retract, including the heaven and earth hooks.

The development of high-rise buildings also limits the necessity of the heaven and earth hook. As we all know, when a fire occurs in a high-rise building, the number of casualties is very high. When firefighters enter a high-rise building to assess the situation, they will use demolition tools to break down the door directly.
Previously, professional demolition tools did not have a heaven and earth hook for security doors. It was only necessary to break a lock point to open the door. However, a heaven and earth hook engages two or even more lock points, which would delay rescue time and negate the security effect. Domestic requirements for fire doors also stipulate that heaven and earth locks are not allowed while maintaining anti-picking features.
Currently, many smart locks are driven by internal circuitry, which means they consume power. The power supply for smart locks is usually battery-powered, creating certain requirements for battery life. An electric lock body that drives a heaven and earth hook will require more power, meaning higher power consumption.
In addition, the push-pull lock body in the structure does not support the heaven and earth hook. Lock bodies that support the heaven and earth hook, compared to ordinary lock bodies, have upper and lower 'wings' and will be a separate model. Therefore, when purchasing a heaven and earth hook, you need to ask customer service whether the lock body supports it.
Regarding the necessity of the heaven and earth hook, I believe that if you live in a high-rise building or a community with more robust security, then there is no need to install one. If you do not live in a high-rise and there are mobile people near your home, and your security door also has a heaven and earth hook, then try to purchase smart locks that support the heaven and earth hook, so you don't need to dismantle the existing one.
