Billiards, an elegant sport
There are three theories regarding the origin of billiards; it is impossible to determine which one is correct.
1. It originated in China.
In a book written by the British poet Cotton in 1674, the history of billiards is described; it is said that billiards is an ancient game that was brought to Europe from the East during the Crusades, and later improved in Italy and Spain.
2. Originated in the UK
It is a form of entertainment within the British royal family, who really enjoy this sport. The first billiard table was installed in London, England, in December 1836. In a book written by the English poet Cotton in 1674, the history of billiards is described; it is said that billiards is an ancient game that was brought to Europe from the East during the Crusades, and it was later improved in Italy and Spain.
3. Originated in France
In 1904, the American Hudson wrote in his works that billiards already existed during the reign of Charles VII in France. The term "billiards" comes from French; the word was already in use in France as early as the 15th century. Moreover, the Russian word "BILLE" (meaning billiard) also originates from French.
However, it is indisputable that the United Kingdom was the first country to establish an organization for billiard sports. In 1885, the UK formed the Billiards Association, comprising amateur and professional players, and established the first set of official competition rules. In 1908, another group formed the Billiards Management Club. In 1919, the Billiards Association and the Billiards Management Club reached an agreement to merge, creating the Billiards Federation – the highest governing body for both English billiards and snooker – responsible for organizing competitions and setting rules for these two sports.
