MSC Container Ship Damaged in Explosion off Iraq​ According to the latest bulletin from the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), on June 1 local time, a cargo ship was hit on its starboard side by an "unidentified projectile" while sailing approximately 40 nautical miles southeast of Umm Qasr, Iraq, followed by a large explosion. UKMTO stated that no environmental impact has been reported so far, and relevant authorities are investigating the incident. Vessels in the area are advised to navigate with caution and report any suspicious activities promptly. Multiple regional and shipping media later identified the involved vessel as the Panama-flagged container ship MSC SARISKA V. According to related reports, the ship had previously conducted container operations at the Port of Umm Qasr, Iraq, with the incident occurring near the waters outside the port. The Pinglu Canal is a key project of the New Western Land-Sea Corridor, stretching 134.2 kilometers from the Pingtang River Estuary in Hengzhou, Guangxi, passing through Lushan Town, Lingshan County, and entering the Beibu Gulf along the Qin River. As the first canal project planned at the national level since the founding of the People's Republic of China to connect rivers and seas, the Pinglu Canal can accommodate 5,000-ton vessels and is set to open for navigation in September this year.
