1. Glass Material

Glass type is one of the first factors to check.
Two vials with the same nominal capacity may be manufactured from different glass materials and therefore should not be compared only by unit price.
For pharmaceutical applications, buyers may need to confirm parameters such as:

  • Chemical composition
  • Coefficient of thermal expansion
  • Applicable technical requirements

2. Product Dimensions and Tolerances

“10 ml vial” or “1 ml prefilled syringe” describes only part of the product.
Body diameter, total height, neck finish, wall thickness and dimensional tolerances may differ between suppliers.
For cartridges and prefilled syringe barrels, small dimensional differences can also affect rubber components and filling equipment.
A technically meaningful comparison should therefore use the same drawing or agreed specification.
If one supplier is quoting according to a customer drawing while another is quoting a general standard product, the prices may not represent equivalent products.

3. Glass Only or Complete Components?

Another common reason for quotation differences is the supply scope.
For example, a vial quotation may cover:
Glass vial only
or:
Glass vial + rubber stopper + aluminum/flip-off cap
A prefilled syringe quotation may include only the glass barrel, while another quotation includes the barrel, plunger stopper, plunger rod and additional components.
Cartridge projects can have the same issue.
Before comparing unit prices, confirm exactly what is included in each quotation.

4. Inspection and Quality Requirements

Pharmaceutical packaging requires controlled quality, but customers do not always request the same inspection level.
Some projects use standard inspection requirements, while others have additional dimensional, cosmetic or application-specific criteria.
Quality documentation can also differ.
Typical supplier qualification packages may include:
COA, technical drawings, product specifications, glass composition information, ISO certificates and relevant test reports.
For projects with additional documentation or testing requirements, these should be discussed before the final quotation.
This helps avoid a situation where the initial price appears attractive but additional qualification requirements are added later.

5. Packing Method

Packing is often overlooked when comparing prices.
For glass products, however, packing directly affects transportation safety and logistics efficiency.

  • Pallet configuration
  • Pallet height
  • Shipping marks

6. Order Quantity

For this reason, buyers should ideally provide both the initial quantity and estimated annual demand when requesting a quotation.
This gives the supplier a better basis for evaluating production arrangements and commercial pricing.
It also helps distinguish between a short-term trial price and a price intended for regular supply.

7. Incoterms and Transportation

Finally, buyers should confirm the commercial basis of the quotation.
An EXW quotation cannot be directly compared with FOB, CFR or CIF pricing.
Depending on the agreed Incoterm, the quoted price may include different combinations of:
Domestic transportation, export packing, customs declaration, port charges, ocean freight and other logistics costs.
For international pharmaceutical packaging projects, transportation method also matters.
Small sample shipments may move by international courier or air freight, while commercial quantities are often transported by sea.
Because pharmaceutical glass is relatively heavy and fragile, carton dimensions, pallet configuration and container utilization can have a meaningful impact on landed cost.
