Rules for starting a billiard game

The rules for starting a game of billiards depend mainly on the style of play; Chinese eight-ball is the most common variant, and in this style it’s necessary to determine who has the advantage first, with the ball having to go into the hole or hit the cushion at the start of the game. There are differences in the details of various styles of play, and the following outlines the common rules.

How to start playing Chinese eight-ball?
This is the most popular game play method in China, and its rules are quite detailed:
Right to serve: The two sides compete by hitting the ball simultaneously from the serving line; the ball bounces back off the top rack, and the side whose ball lands closer to the bottom rack gets the right to serve, or a coin toss can also be used to decide.
Valid shot: After the shot is taken, at least 1 target ball must go into the pocket, or at least 4 target balls must touch the edge of the table; otherwise it is considered a foul.
Requirements for arranging the balls: 15 balls are to be arranged in a triangle, with ball number 8 at the center and the ball at the top corner placed at the designated spot.
What are the differences between snooker and 9-ball?
There are requirements for starting the game that vary slightly in other gameplay modes:
Snooker: The white ball is placed in any position within area D; it is necessary to hit the red balls first, and at least one ball must touch the table or go into a pocket after the shot is taken.
American Nine-ball: 9 balls are arranged in a diamond shape, with ball number 1 at the front; to start the game, one must hit ball number 1 first, and it is also necessary for either a ball to go into the pockets or for it to hit the band.
How to handle a foul at the start of the game
If the kick does not meet the requirements (for example, no goal is scored and the ball does not touch the sideline):
Opponent’s choice: The opponent can decide to accept the current state of the table and continue playing, or ask that the balls be arranged again so that they can be the one to start the game.
Special foul: If the ball in use falls into the pocket or flies out at the start of a shot, the opposing player gains the right to have "the ball in hand" and can place the ball anywhere behind the starting line before hitting it.
